Day 49
I had a meeting with the Alzheimer’s Association yesterday to talk about their Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body education series and me coming on as a guest speaker. Basically, what they teach through this series is that brain health is related to your overall health. Preventing Alzheimer’s disease or dementia is not just about doing the crossword puzzle. It’s taking care of your nutrition, activity, socialization, sleep, and of course risk reduction like wearing a bike helmet, etc.
Did you know that diets high in sugar also reduce the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF) which assists in the connections between nerve synapses? High levels of blood sugar have an adverse effect on the brain and excessive levels can lead to cognitive decline. And, unfortunately, some damage done to your cognitive function and brain chemistry cannot be undone! This made me think about great aunt who had Type 2 diabetes and then dementia and Alzheimer’s. It’s a metabolic continuum.
Too much sugar is no joke.
If you want to talk about cutting back on sugar, let’s schedule a time to talk. If you have prediabetes and need a free virtual national CDC diabetes prevention program, I’m teaching one starting on September 23. Let me know if you are interested.
