Day 70
Happy First Day of Autumn!
Yesterday was an easy day with no sugar distractions at all, just work, and then last night I started reading The Better Brain by Bonnie J. Kaplan and Julie J. Rucklidge. Based on many years of research, the book is about treating mental health disorders like anxiety, depression, and ADHD with food and nutrients. After all, food and nutrients are chemical messengers and information to the body. Instead of “feeding” ourselves with chemicals in the form of pills to balance our brains, these scientists advocate for feeding our brains with the right kinds of chemical compounds found naturally in food. Obviously, sugar is not on the menu. I’m excited to read more and share it with you too.
This morning I’m feeling the shift in seasons and at this time of year I like to start adding in medicinal teas to my diet. I enjoy roasted dandelion tea, and also infused blends with clove, cinnamon, and ginger. A friend who studies Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recently reminded me of a favorite with orange peel, marshmallow root, and rosemary which helps protect the lungs and large intestine at this time of year. I also like licorice tea to protect the throat during this change. According to TCM, we come out of the summertime with qualities such as heat, moist, and a diet of sugary summer fruits, and with fall we transition and prepare for wind, and dryness as we approach winter. Switching up our food can help our immune system, our respiratory system, and our gut transition and prepare to resist colds and infections during this time.
Speaking of tea, today I’m meeting a colleague at Starbucks and I’ll be ordering tea. She let me know she’ll be going for the pumpkin spice latte. Maybe I’ll tell her about TCM!
Have a great start to Autumn today!
