My Sugar Free Year - Day 84

October 7, 2021
Day 84

For the past 83 days, we’ve been focusing on added sugars in the diet, and haven’t talked at all about carbohydrates which even though might not contain added sugars, they raise blood sugar levels just as added sugar does. As a holistic health coach, I tend not to look at calories or macronutrients, but rather the properties and energetics of the whole food.  However, we can’t ignore the science of how foods work in our body.

Carbohydrates are our fuel, but a high carb diet can cause higher insulin in the blood which can also cause sodium retention which can cause high blood pressure. So, if you are concerned not only with added sugars, but high blood sugar spikes, then foods such as pasta, bread, flour tortillas, bagels, white rice should be avoided, or eaten less frequently and in small amounts and preferably together with protein, fiber, and/or healthy fat to slow down the blood sugar spike.

What about higher carbohydrate fruits, vegetables, and legumes?  Enjoy them for all of their powerful nutrients, while being mindful of portions.  I’ll always advocate for choosing whole foods with lots of variety, and color.

I started outlining my quit sugar course to be ready to launch next year. If you are interested in getting on a special mailing list just about this course, or if you are interested in joining the Beta course, let me know. Respond here or send me an email at coachmaryellen@outlook.com
