We’ve had a heck of a first half of the year. We know more now about this novel coronavirus, but there are still so many unknowns. That uncertainty causes stress and a whole range of emotions. Some days I feel sad. I feel sad for our country. Sad for our lack of leadership. Sad for those who are struggling with unemployment, loss of business, illness, and balancing work at home and child care.
I recently watched a discussion between Dr. Laurie Santos, professor of psychology at Yale University and the director of The Happiness Lab, and her colleague Dr. Jamil Zaki, assistant professor of psychology at Stanford University. They were talking about the question of how we will embrace the second half of 2020, and the difference between enjoyable and meaningful related to true happiness and wellbeing. (Dr. Laurie Santos teaches The Science of Wellbeing, Yale’s most popular course). During these times when we need restraint, instead of looking for momentary happiness through doing things we enjoy, we should be looking at experiences that are meaningful. And, the best way to experience meaningfulness, according to the research, is by doing something for someone else, in your own way. It doesn’t have to take much.
The doctors also spoke about a rise in post traumatic stress disorder, which involves a difficulty returning to normal life after trauma. However, many people with PTSD do not report regretting their traumatic experience because they also experienced post traumatic growth where we can be stronger, have greater spirituality, happiness, and purpose after trauma.
We can step up and rise up and be positive and make the best of what we have. We can reach out to others starting with our friends and family, and continuing into our communities. Giving of ourselves is needed now, and guess what, it makes us feel more positive too. This is human nature. Rise up. Give.
I didn’t mention race above because guess what, this is not a new issue. This is an old, ongoing, systemic issue. In fact, the rising up of voices of all colors, races, religions, sexual orientations is one positive aspect of our current times. Injustice is “front page” news. Many are learning, questioning, and debating with family and friends - good, great! I hope we can keep the momentum going and open eyes and make some steps forward.
Wishing you a meaningful second half of 2020.
