Day 45
There’s a hummingbird feeder right outside of the bay window in our kitchen, so we can see the beautiful little guys and gals when they come to feed. Yesterday while making dinner, I noticed the feeder was empty, and the poor little guy attracted by the red feeder tried for some sugar, and unsatisfied flitted away.
So, it was time to make some more simple syrup for the hummingbirds. I guess they are really trying to fatten up for the cooler weather too. When I went to find the 5-pound sugar bag in the basement pantry, it wasn’t there, and I realized we had just stopped buying it for baking, or for my husbands’ coffee. I scrounged 1 cup of sugar from an old sugar bowl in the dining room to make the simple syrup. Maybe this will be the last batch of the season. The hummingbirds will start to depart in late September, early October. It’s pretty great that I won’t be buying sugar again really for anything. Then next April I’ll buy some for the little birds.
