My Sugar Free Year - Day 46

Yesterday I wanted pizza for dinner.  Ordering pizza on the weekend is such a break from meal planning and cooking during the week, and with more meal planning and cooking on the weekend for the next week, we all need a break.  Plus, everyone loves our local pizza restaurant.  We’ve been going there for the past 20 years since we lived in town. Before my son was even born, a group of friends would gather there every Friday night, and talk about the week, and just have a lot of fun.  Our children grew up there, and we all know the owners and they know us. 
 
Back then, almost everyone ordered pizza, but I would order shrimp Fra diavolo with a side of spinach every Friday night. I was doing the low carb, no gluten or dairy thing even way back then. I loved that dish. These days I love the cauliflower pizza and I get it with broccoli and spinach, no cheese. It’s a little boring, but I feel like I’m having pizza. 
 
So, when I decided to get pizza take out last night, of course I needed to investigate.  I sent a Facebook message to the owner, reminded her of my no sugar year, and asked what the ingredients were in the cauliflower crust. After I ordered it – taking a chance – and really just wanted it - she sent me a photo of the ingredient label, and let me know that the marinara sauce did not have added sugar, but the pizza sauce did have added sugar. The cauliflower crust it turns out does contain added sugar.
 
So, I dodged the sugar by not ordering the tomato sauce on the pizza and just getting ricotta, spinach, and broccoli.  But the cauliflower crust, as it turns out, and I shouldn’t be surprised because it is a processed food, does contain added sugar. I ate added sugar!  Again, why, oh why, does sugar needed to be added?
 
Well, now I know.  No cauliflower crust pizza for me due to added sugar.
