People talk about obesity related to nutrition and sugar, but we don’t really hear people talking about nutrition related to mental health and resilience in times of stress and trauma. Here are a few things from the talk with Dr. Bonnie Kaplan yesterday that I wanted to share with you.
· 67% of children are eating processed food and not getting the micronutrients they need for good health including brain health.
· Micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, essential fatty acids, amino acids) are cofactors for metabolizing brain chemicals (and hormones) like tryptophan, melatonin, and serotonin, so without the proper micronutrients, our brains can’t function optimally.
· Data shows that of those on psychiatric medication, 97% of a person’s health care budget is saved by moving to micronutrient supplements and a whole food diet. Truly food is medicine.
